What Is Body Fat Percentage and Why Does It Matter?
Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total body weight that consists of fat tissue. Unlike BMI — which only factors in height and weight — body fat percentage distinguishes between fat mass and lean mass (muscle, bone, water, organs). Body Fat Calculation Methods Compared
US Navy Method (Circumference-Based)
Developed for military physical fitness assessments, the Navy method requires only a flexible tape measure. For males, it uses waist and neck circumference. For females, it adds hip circumference. The formula uses logarithmic relationships between these measurements and height to estimate body fat within ±3–4%. It is the most practical method for home use without specialized equipment.
Jackson-Pollock 3-Site (Skinfold Caliper)
Published in 1978 and 1980, the Jackson-Pollock method uses skinfold calipers at three body sites — chest, abdomen, and thigh for men; tricep, suprailiac, and thigh for women. The sum of the three skinfolds, combined with age, feeds into a regression equation to calculate body density. Body fat percentage is then derived using the Siri equation: % BF = (495 / Body Density) − 450. This method achieves ±3% accuracy when performed correctly by a trained assessor.
YMCA Method
The YMCA formula offers a simpler tape-measure alternative. For males, it relies solely on waist circumference and body weight. For females, it uses four measurements: waist, wrist, hip, and forearm. It is slightly less accurate than the Navy method for most populations but is widely used in community health settings due to its accessibility.
BMI-Based (Deurenberg Formula)
When only height, weight, and age are available, the Deurenberg equation estimates body fat from BMI: % BF = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × Age) − (10.8 × sex_factor) − 5.4. While the most convenient, this method carries a ±5–6% margin of error and significantly underestimates body fat in highly muscular individuals.
