What Is Body Fat Percentage and Why Does It Matter?

Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total body weight that consists of fat tissue. Unlike BMI — which only factors in height and weight — body fat percentage distinguishes between fat mass and lean mass (muscle, bone, water, organs). Body Fat Calculation Methods Compared

US Navy Method (Circumference-Based)

Developed for military physical fitness assessments, the Navy method requires only a flexible tape measure. For males, it uses waist and neck circumference. For females, it adds hip circumference. Jackson-Pollock 3-Site (Skinfold Caliper)

The sum of the three skinfolds, combined with age, feeds into a regression equation to calculate body density. YMCA Method

The YMCA formula offers a simpler tape-measure alternative. For males, it relies solely on waist circumference and body weight. For females, it uses four measurements: waist, wrist, hip, and forearm. BMI-Based (Deurenberg Formula)
