How to Calculate FFMI — Step by Step
The FFMI formula requires two inputs: your lean body mass and your height. Here is how it works:
- Calculate Lean Body Mass: LBM = Total Body Weight (kg) × (1 − Body Fat % / 100). For example, a 75 kg person at 15% body fat has LBM = 75 × 0.85 = 63.75 kg.
- Convert Height to Meters: Height in cm ÷ 100. For example, 178 cm = 1.78 m.
- Calculate Raw FFMI: FFMI = LBM (kg) ÷ Height (m)². For our example: 63.75 ÷ (1.78 × 1.78) = 20.1.
- Calculate Adjusted FFMI (Kouri): Adjusted FFMI = Raw FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − Height in meters). For our example: 20.1 + 6.1 × (1.8 − 1.78) = 20.1 + 0.12 = 20.2.
