What is HRV and Why Does It Matter?
Heart Rate Variability measures the millisecond variation between consecutive heartbeats. A higher HRV means your autonomic nervous system is more flexible — it can ramp up for stress then calm down efficiently. Elite athletes, healthy young adults, and people with low chronic stress consistently show higher HRV.
| Age | Typical Range (ms) | Population Median |
|---|---|---|
| 18–25 | 35–85 ms | 55 ms |
| 26–35 | 32–78 ms | 50 ms |
| 36–45 | 27–65 ms | 42 ms |
| 46–55 | 21–52 ms | 33 ms |
| 56–65 | 17–42 ms | 26 ms |
| 65+ | 13–34 ms | 21 ms |
Note: Apple Watch reports SDNN, not rMSSD. SDNN ≈ rMSSD ÷ 0.6. Always select the correct metric above.
